Ancestry Tours of Carradale Scotland


Ancestry Tours of Carradale, Scotland. Carradale is a village on the east side of Kintyre, overlooking the Kilbrannan Sound, just fourteen miles from Campbeltown. In the 17th and 18th centuries there were small communities of crofters and fishermen working in and around Carradale. The introduction of steam ships transformed Kintyre and from the 1830s until the Second World War daily steamers went from Campbeltown to Glasgow, calling at Carradale.

The current name is a contraction of Aberelliot, meaning mouth of the Elliot. It is located west of Arbroath. The main village settlement is on the Elliot Water. The parish is believed to be the original home of Clan Elliot, which was transplanted in the Scottish Borders to defend the newly-crowned Robert the Bruce's Scotland from English invaders through an intricate network of peel towers. The Elliots joined the clans of Armstrong, Scott, Douglas, Kerr, Nixon, Hepburn and Maxwell in this effort. The Border Reivers and other titles such a Outlaws of the Marshes are most informative about the Elliots and their exploits after leaving the Arbirlot parish.

Ancestry Tours of Barry Mill Carnoustie Scotland


Ancestry Tours of Barry Mill, Carnoustie, Scotland. At the far west end of the town of Carnoustie, is the village of Barry. The village is much quieter now than it was a few years ago since the opening of the Barry bypass. On the North side of the road that runs through the village, to the west of the Barry Burn is the kirkyard and ruins of the old Parish Church. To the immediate east of this, a road heads North towards the old A92. Half a mile up this road, on the left hand side is the medieval motte associated with Grange of Barry, from where the monks of Balmerino Abbey managed the parish from the 13th century. On the other side of the road, a driveway runs towards the old Upper Mill, now simply known as Barry Mill, a water powered corn mill dating from 1815, when it was built on the site of a much older mill dating to the 16th century. It, along with the nearby bridge which was part of the old road from Barry Grange to Panbride.
